Kornelus BAAS, born in Oude Pekela (NL) on 28.07.1893.
From 1935 to 1939 he was a member of the municipal council of Oude Pekela for the CPN and at the beginning of WWII became the leader of the resistance group „Noorderlicht“ in Oude Pekela. He was also a distributor of the illegal magazines „Het Noorderlicht“ and „De Waarheid“ in that area. On September 10, 1941, on the instructions of an SS man, he was taken from his home by the Sicherheitsdienst (German Security Police) accompanied by several German soldiers and taken to the - later infamous - Scholtenhuis in Groningen.
On April 2, 1942, he was transferred to the Buchenwald concentration camp, after which a few months later, on October 29 or 30 of that year, he was transferred to the Dachau concentration camp.
He was then transferred to the Flossenbürg concentration camp a few weeks later, between December 7 and 9. He died in that camp on March 22, 1943.
Baas was one of the 55 Groningen members of the Noorderlicht group who were arrested in 1941. Only a few survived the concentration camps. (taken and translated fom wikipedia)
