Adolf Gerlich was born on April 26, 1924, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He was since 1938 in the Hachshara (Zionist pioneering training) in Berlin as well as a member of the “HeChalutz” movement.
In 1939 he moved to the Netherlands with the Youth Aliya and participated in the “Werkdorp” Hachshara in Wieringermeer from 1939 until its liquidation in the summer of 1941.
From there he moved to the “Youth Aliya House” in Loosdrecht and from there to a Hachshara in Elden.
In April 1943 he was deported to Westerbork camp and in February 1944 was taken with the first transport from Westerbork to Bergen - Belsen. He was imprisoned in Bergen - Belsen until early April 1945, working in the vegetable garden and later in the kitchen.
From Bergen - Belsen he was sent with the “Lost Train” which arrived after a two - week journey in Troebitz where he was liberated. Following liberation, he rode a bicycle to the American occupation zone and from there returned to the Netherlands.
Adolf immigrated to Eretz Israel in 1946.
Adolf writes in his testimony about the diary written by Arnold „Effie“ Koller and his friend Hans Horwitz, members of the Hachshara in Elden who were both Sonderkommando men at the crematorium in Bergen - Belsen camp.
