Hallo @billenzie, thanks for supporting this project!

Just a short note on „causes of death“:
Like many other volunteers, I’m trying to be careful about this in my comments.
In many cases, the original entries in the documents do not correspond to the truth, but are simply made up to conceal the real causes of death. (i.e.Malnutrition, inhumane working conditions, maltreatment, murder…)

also see this Arolsen e-guide „Death Register → What should be considered when working with the document?
As for (so-called) „suicide“: here’s a sad example

Kind regards!

Hello @routebleue !

Thanks for your answer and the guide from the Arolsen archives.
I’ll be more considerate regarding causes of death. Of course I was doubting the truth about those records.
I just saw fellow contributors mentioning the dateofdeath and added the recorded cause.
Being a few days into this work I was drawn into the tragic of so many.

Is it helpful for anyone to post the date in the forum?

Hi @billenzie,
I remember my first weeks at ENC well, and the emotional impact these documents had on me. (although I had thought I knew „a bit“ about the topic). - And they still have. …
Likewise, I keep learning new things all the time. (facts, background etc.)

Sometimes I add dates and other information I found in other sources (if they are not mentioned in the document itself). Just in case a victim’s descendant is looking for his relative. (But that’s just my quite personal way.)

There are volunteers who focus on certain nationalities, and some of us usually tag (#) french - (#) dutch -
(#) belgian - (#) danish - (#) norwegian for them.

So there are no rules or agreements about what should get tagged, flagged, or posted in the forum.
Volunteers are here for very different reasons, and their focus and the way they handle the documents are just as individual and personal.
A former ENC moderator: „The forum belongs to the volunteers.“

Have a good day!
