Alfred Knieper was born on March 2, 1909, in Zell/Mosel. After attending elementary school, he began working as a mold caster in an industrial company in 1924. At the age of just 17, in 1926, he joined the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and the free trade union. From 1930 to 1932, he worked as a machine setter.
