Rifka HALTER née HOROWITZ (*20.02.1892)
Memorial de la Deportation des Juifs de France
Mémorial de la Shoah
She was married to Joseph Mordka HALTER (* February 13 or 19, 1890, Warsaw, Poland).
They had three children: Marie (she died at the age of six after an illness); Samuel (Sam) (* 1916); and Paul (* October 10, 1920).
In May 1940 the family fled to Vichy, but returned to Brussels after a few weeks. According to orders, Joseph Halter was to report to the SS assembly camp in Mechelen on August 3, 1942. He ignored this. He and his wife wanted to flee to Switzerland. His son Paul provided him with documents for this purpose. The plan failed; the couple was arrested near the border and deported from Drancy to Auschwitz on August 21, 1942.
Both were murdered there.
Their sons joined the resistance in 1941. They survived the Shoah.
Samuel HALTER was able to escape to London via Spain and Portugal, and later took over the organization of the Belgian Navy’s hospitals.
Paul HALTER was involved, among other things, in the attack on Convoy XX, which enabled over 100 deportees to escape to freedom. He was arrested and also deported to Auschwitz.
He was one of the 32 survivors of his convoy (out of a total of 640 people).
In 1980, he founded the „Foundation Auschwitz,“ serving as its president until his death on March 30, 2013.
