René Hermans
HERMANS Guillaume Marie René, born in Hasselt on February 15, 1918. Arbeitsführer. Got the
death penalty and was shot in Delobbe Barracks in Mechelen where he died on April 12, 1947.
René Hermans (1918 - Mechelen, 1947) was a Belgian professional soldier.
In September 1942 he became chamber superior of the Brussels postmen, who had been arrested after sabotage in the delivery of German letters. He soon became a snitch, questioning his roommates. He was held responsible for the deaths of five prisoners. At first he was in Breendonk. He was then deported to Mauthausen in November 1942, where he also became a kapo. He faced the firing squad in 1947.
René Hermans’ story also appears in the book This is how it was in Mauthausen by Ludo van Eck. It explains how he was trapped and how he abused other fellow prisoners.
