Darka KUTSCHERUK - another postcard (21.04.43)
Asked by @susekaj

I’d like to know how many people lived in Schiwotowka back then.

1 „Gefällt mir“

hard to tell, could not find an exact number:

  • 1913: 226 households
  • 1930 collectivization of 546 households during communism (some might have been murdered or deported during „dekulakization“)
  • 1932-33 famine - around 500 starved
  • II World War: 103 died, 26 returned wounded [1]
  • german occupation: for the rajon Oratow: probably 2817 deported for forced labour [2]
  • specifically for Schiwotiwka around 47 people - identified by postcards sent home (but there were probably more, the linked list is not complete - starts with family names with „M“[3]
  • today 661 people [4]

Thank you very much, @mally, for all the information you’ve gathered.

So, in Schiwotowka, we have a village with a few hundred residents, and by now there are about ten people with the last name “Kutscheruk” alone who were forced to perform labor in Germany. If they all belonged to the same family, it’s possible that hardly any of the “Kutscheruks” remained in their homeland.
