My cousin, Josef OJSERKIS, was born 23 July 1882 in Podhajce Galicia, and lived in Vienna Austria with his wife Malke MINGELGRUN. They escaped to Brussels Belgium in 1939. Malke died in the psychiatric hospital in Duffel Belgium. Josef was arrested in Brussels (date unknown) and was sent to Gurs or possibly Saint-Cyprien. He escaped from Gurs on 4 Feb 1941, according to a document from Prefect Oloron-Ste-Marie. I do not know how and for how long he lived under-cover in France after his escape; or where and how he was re-captured. He was imprisoned at Drancy near Paris, then in Malines Belgium in 1942. On 15 Jan 1943 he was sent on Transport 19 as prisoner # 236 to Auschwitz. My question: How could Josef have escaped from Gurs? Is it possible that he lived in the town of Meillon, or in another small town nearby, from where it may have been easier to escape? His children Stella and Max made it to USA in 1939; the fate of his son Wilhelm is unknown.
