Friedrich Weiner was born in Moravia (today’s Czech Republic) on 28 March 1873. At the age of 14, he traveled to Vienna in Austria to train as a turner. In Vienna he met Ida Schulhof, an Austrian-Jewish girl, and married her. The couple eventually had two daughters, Hedwig (b. 1907) and Charlotte (b. 1910).
After the German annexation (Anschluss) of Austria in March 1938, conditions for the Jewish population quickly became very difficult. The German Nuremberg Laws were implemented in Austria as early as May of the same year, and Jews were eventually excluded from working life and educational institutions. During Kristallnacht on 9-10 In November 1938, all synagogues in Vienna (with the exception of one) were destroyed. Most Jewish business premises were looted, and over 6,000 Jews were arrested. Most of these were transported to the Dachau concentration camp within a short time.
The Weiner couple came as refugees from Vienna to Norway in May 1939. Due to their advanced age, they were both accommodated at the Jødiske gamlehjemmet at Holbergsgate 21 in Oslo. However, during the campaign against the Jews in Norway in the autumn of 1942, they did not escape. Friedrich was arrested on 26 October and transferred to Berg prison camp outside Tønsberg. He was released on 7 November, but arrested again and placed in Bredtveit. From here, on 26 November 1942, he was deported on the ship Danube to Stettin and from there to the extermination camp Auschwitz. Upon arrival at the camp on 1 December, Friedrich Weiner was led straight into the gas chamber and killed.
His wife Ida was deported with Gotenland on 25 February 1943 and killed in Asuchwitz.
