22nd June 1944
Leopoldo Gasparotto, lawyer, organiser of the resistance in the camp, is killed at Fossoli di Carpi. A member of the clandestine ‘Alta Italia’ Military Committee, arrested in Milan, in Piazza Castello with other comrades from the ‘G.L’ Command on 11 December 1943, he had arrived from the Milanese prison of San Vittore at the end of April 1944. Apparently he was organising, thanks to outside connections, the liberation of a transport of Jews, a revolt and an escape from the Fossoli camp. He was killed, shot in the back, by SS NCOs Ludwig Hasenstein and Anton Rabanzer, who had come specially from Verona. Gold Medal for Military Valour.
When Gasparotto’s tortured body was brought back to the camp, on a van and wrapped in a cloth, the politician Angelo Verzani and the Jew Giorgio Sealtiel were able to see it. His body was buried in the Carpi cemetery, in camp 7, at the behest of the SS without any indication of his name, as an unknown prisoner ‘killed during an escape attempt’.
