Carlo AVANZINI

Carlo Avanzini was born in Genoa on 6 May 1920, the son of Federico Avanzini and Erminia Rapallino. A clerk and medical student. A resident of the city of the Lanterna, during World War II he evacuated from the Ligurian capital to Serravalle Scrivia. After the Armistice, he chose to join the Resistance, joining the 1st Autonomous Brigade ‚Giancarllo Odino‘ on 1 April 1944. Partisan, with the battle name of ‚Pepé‘. In the days of the Nazi-Fascist round-up of Benedicta, he was arrested in Voltaggio, between 9 April 1944 and 11 April 1944. Detained in Voltaggio then in Novi Ligure, he was deported to the Mauthausen lager on 16 April 1944. After an initial internment he was transferred to camp Gusen II (Mauthausen) on 23 May 1944 and then again to the Linz sub-camp on 10 March 1945. He survived the extermination and was liberated in Gusen by the US Army. Having found his loved ones and returned to life, he died in Genoa on 4 February 2004.
