Dr. Leopold WEISS, born July 21, 1893 in Vienna/Wien

Sadly enough, people persecuted by the Nazi regime were not necessarily safe in (forced) exile.
However, this „cooperation“ between GB and Australia was new to me…

Leopold’s parents and siblings were able to flee to Great Britain via Italy, Paris and the Netherlands, while Leopold was in a Gestapo prison. From there he later also made it to London and joined his family.
He and his brother Richard were interned as „enemy aliens“ under British law on July 1, 1940, although they were persecuted by the Nazi regime. - Shortly afterwards, they were taken to Australia on the troop transport ship „Dunera“ with over 2,500 other people also considered „enemy aliens“ by the British government.
They remained interned in Australia until the end of the war: in Hay camp (New South Wales) and Tatura labor camp (Victoria).
Leopold returned to GB after the war and then followed his mother to the USA.
In 1952 he became an American citizen.
