THE ESCAPES
A few escapes were successful, however. Thus four inmates of the Orolsen Kommando tried their luck during the summer of 1944, two Luxembourgers (Pierre Schaul and Nicolas Wolff), the Belgian Fernand Labalue and the Pole Adolf Korzynski. They manage to occupy positions that will benefit the undertaking. Korzynski and Wolff in the vehicle repair shop. Labalue in the SS clothing store and Schaul as their hairdresser, the latter steals keys from the SS offices and Labalue from SS uniforms, while in the garage the other two prepare a vehicle considered unusable. On June 4, 1944, Korzynski wears the uniform of an SS general, the others contented themselves with more modest outfits. They passed without incident in front of the sentries. When their fuel runs out, they continue their escape on foot and risk boarding a train heading towards Trier. There they separated. All four survived. The audacity paid off. The feat is quite exceptional. Because the Nazi KZs don’t release their prey that easily.
